John Dunn's MADCAP 24

John Dunn's MADCAP 24 is in its fifth fun year. It's a 24-hour creative event in which producer John Dunn gathers together a group of writers on a Friday night and challenges them each to write, cast, costume, direct and produce a ten-minute play for a live audience within 24 hours. Dunn got the idea from a group of friends in Austin called Loaded Gun Theory. He brought it back to Houston and got the whole city's theater scene involved. "I reach out to the entire Houston community of theater to create this," says Dunn. "I have people from Fan Factory. I will probably have a couple of people from Mildred's Umbrella. I usually get people from Shunya, an Indian theater group. I tend to pull people from community theater as well." He can never be sure who's going to be on the program until the Friday night that the writing actually starts, but last year, the group wrote an entire musical in one day.
