“The Spectacular of Vernacular”

What is Houston art? Or more broadly, Texas art? The idea of regional artistic influences is becoming a topic of debate as, like everyone else, many artists become a part of a global community. Does regionalism even exist? The upcoming show at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston explores the concept of vernacular in art, meaning works that reference specific cultural spheres — folklore, kitsch, traditions and sayings experienced only in certain cultural or geographical regions. “The Spectacular of Vernacular” looks at 20 artists speaking in their own mother tongues, as it were, using artistic dialects outsiders can’t mimic. Among the participants is Lari Pittman, who contributes A Decorated Chronology of Insistence and Resignation 330, a smash of color and images from a red and green car to pieces of blue clothing, overlaid with text.

The exhibition schedule will include a gallery talk on August 4 called Homespun: Houston Stories, in which local artists and writers will address everything, from local music to graffiti to food, that represents Houston vernacular in art. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays.
