Giselle/Indigo

The woman who taught Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch how to dance is staging the company’s new production of Giselle. Ai-Gul Gaisina, previously of the Kirov and Stanislavsky Ballet Theatre, counts Welch among her former star students. Working with the three dancers sharing the role of Giselle — Danielle Rowe, Sara Webb and Karina Gonzalez — Gaisina is bringing a decidedly Russian flair to the story of a beautiful young peasant girl who falls in love with the dashing Count Albrecht. When Giselle discovers his infidelity, she dies of a broken heart and is transformed into a Wili, a ghost that exacts revenge on unfaithful lovers. The second offering on the program is Welch’s Indigo, a 25-minute piece that explores the seven colors of a person’s chakra.
