Nilo Cruzs 2003 Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna in the Tropics is a glorious tale. Set in Tampa during the 1920s, the play recounts the story of a group of cigar workers. During their hours processing tobacco and rolling cigars, theyre entertained by a lector, someone who reads to them to help keep the boredom at bay. The play opens with the workers anxiously awaiting their new lector to arrive (hes sailing in from Cuba). They soon find out this lector is no ordinary reader, and he will read no ordinary book. Hell be reading Tolstoys Anna Karenina. Through the lectors charming personality and the force of Tolstoys epic tale of love and heartbreak, the cigar-rollers lives are changed forever.
