It helps if you know a little bit about history when you see Robert Pruitts You Are Your Own Twin. Currently a visiting professor at Texas Southern University, Pruitt based the drawings in the show on W.E.B. Du Boiss idea of double consciousness. African Americans have a dual identity, Pruitt tells us. They are Americans and they are black. More than just the public/private personas most people have regardless of their race, Pruitt holds that the division is more deeply developed among African Americans.

One of the drawings we see in the exhibit, Janus, shows a woman wearing a mask on the back of her head. Viewers see her face, but are aware that, like the Roman god shes named for, the woman presents two faces to the world. 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays. Through October 15.
