24th Annual Día de los Muertos Retablo Exhibition

It’s an expression of art…culture…religion…Tecate. Whatever your viewpoint, Día de los Muertos is a cause for celebration, and the folks over at the Lawndale Art Center know how to do it up right. The "24th Annual Día de los Muertos Retablo Exhibition" is at the center of it all. The open-call show features contemporary takes on the retablo tradition, with each artist using an eight-by-ten-inch piece of sheet metal as a starting point. Some 250 artists from around Texas contributed pieces, which range from the whimsical to the weird. At the center’s gala on October 21, the creations are sold during a silent auction and party. A series of related events are planned during the exhibition’s run, including a sugar skull making workshop, musical ofrenda and family fiesta. The gala is at 7 p.m. October 21. $45. Regular viewing hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays to Fridays, noon to 5 p.m. Saturdays. 4912 Main. For a full schedule of events, call 713-528-5858 or visit www.lawndaleartcenter.org. Free.
Tuesdays-Sundays. Starts: Oct. 18. Continues through Nov. 5, 2011
