Vampire Lesbians of Sodom

The title to the campy comedy Vampire Lesbians of Sodom gives you a big hint as to the plot of the story, admits director Joe Angel Babb, but there’s more to it than that. In the play, vampires, who are beautiful, suave and alluring, have become celebrities – actors, as it happens. Two female vamps, who have been constant rivals since the times of Sodom, meet again in 1980s Las Vegas and battle it out on stage.

Vampire Lesbians, written in 1984 by Charles Busch of Psycho Beach Party fame, is an over-the-top satire. During rehearsals, Babb found himself giving his cast one direction over and over: “Do it bigger, go further, keep playing,” he laughs. “One of the principles of camp theater is pushing limitations, and we’re certainly doing that.” At one point the cast is in Las Vegas, rehearsing a dance number for a new show. “It’s a mix of real choreography, rehearsal choreography and bad Vegas. It’s fun!” 8 p.m. Fridays, 8 and 11 p.m. Saturdays. Through October 22. Frenetic Theater, 5102 Navigation. For information, call 832‑250-7786 or visit www.comeunhinged.com. $20.
