The star of of such films as Guess Who's Coming to Dinner and In the Heat of the Night, Sidney Poitier is famous for his incredible accomplishments as an actor (his performance in The Lilies of the Fieldsearned him an Oscar, the first ever for a black man). But he was sometimes criticized by the African American community for his choice of roles, which more often than not were polite, self-contained men noticeably free of political views, sexual desires or anger. Poitier was aware he was a role-model for young black men and wanted to present a respectable image, but his critics felt his neutered characters sanitized the representation of African Americans in film.
