Fidelio

A woman’s husband is falsely imprisoned, possibly already dead. His wife sets out to search for him and somehow makes her way through the labyrinth of a prison system. Fidelio, based on a true story, is filled with passion, angst, uncertainty and, of course, loyalty. It took 11 years for Ludwig van Beethoven to write, and while his only opera presents some real challenges for its singers — particularly in the first act for Leonore (sung by Finnish dramatic soprano Karita Mattila), it’s considered a classic.
