Anjelah Johnson

No matter what she does, comedian Anjelah Johnson looks like she’s a cheerleader. A very attractive young woman, Johnson spent a year shaking her pom-poms for the Oakland Raiders, but left them behind when she figured out that being funny paid better. Trouble is, when she walks on the stage, she still looks perky and, well, damn it, cheerful. At least until she opens her mouth, then it’s all sass.

Fans howl every time she goes into her character Bon Qui Qui (a black woman with a serious attitude problem) or her nail salon routine (with Tammy, a Vietnamese attendant who pushes extra services). Johnson also jokes about gangsta-turned-Christian rappers who go to South Central Savior, where the pastor comes out with a 40-ounce for communion. Like the best comedians, Johnson exaggerates real-life events for her routines, making her humor seem simultaneously familiar and ridiculous. 8 p.m. Thursday, 8 and 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m. Sunday. Houston Improv, 7620 Katy Freeway. For information, call 713‑333-8888 or visit www.improvhouston.com. $32.
