"Drawn Out Death"

Talento Bilingüe de Houston will be gathering together work by more than 70 different artists as part of its Día de los Muertos celebration in an exhibition called “Drawn Out Death.” It’s no surprise that each of the many works deals in some way with death or mortality. Mediums on display will be wide and varied, including ink and pen, glass and needlepoint (we haven’t seen that in a while).

More About

One highlight is a graphite drawing by Kini Chris Cooke, a New Orleans native now working in Austin. Her drawing is a morbid homage to M.C. Escher’s famous lithograph Drawing Hands. In the original, the subject is two hands drawing each other. Cooke’s vision is largely unchanged, save that one hand is that of a skeleton, a powerful symbol of the cycle of life and its end in place of the familiar paradox.

There’s an opening reception at 7 p.m. November 3, with live music by Nick Gaitan, who was last year’s Houston Press Music Awards Musician of the Year. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesdays. Through November 27. Talento Bilingüe de Houston, 333 South Jensen. For information, call 713-222-1213 or visit www.tbhcenter.org. Free.
Mondays-Fridays. Starts: Nov. 3. Continues through Nov. 27, 2011
