Houston Via Colori ® The Street Painting Festival

Nine of the country’s best street painters will be among the 200-plus artists gathering at Sam Houston Park to produce pastel chalk masterpieces for the Houston Via Colori® The Street Painting Festival. Among them are Houston’s own Anat Ronen, Los Angeles’s Julio Jiminez and Coral Springs’s Betty Dominguez. Planned works range from photorealistic to whimsical. (Some of our favorites from past festivals include a recreation of the Mona Lisa, an image of someone seemingly crawling out of a sewer drain and a colorful portrait of Louis Armstrong.)

More About

A separate challenge, the 2nd Annual Great Chalk-Off, pairs a local television personality with a Center for Hearing and Speech alum (the festival benefits the Center). Each team will work on a 2’x2’ patch of downtown roadway. With just 30 minutes to complete their mural, the pair will create an image inspired by the theme “Things I Like to Hear.” This year’s Great Chalk-Off judges’ panel includes our own Houston Press marketing director, Brenna Croom.

Musical entertainment for Via Colori® will be provided by a dozen Houston groups including the Literary Greats, Two Star Symphony, and the popular Roky Moon & BOLT! 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Sam Houston Park, 1000 Bagby. For information, call 713-523-3633 or visit www.centerhearingandspeech.org/via‑colori. Free to $20.
Sat., Nov. 19; Sun., Nov. 20, 2011
