Mildred’s Umbrella Theater, one of Houston’s most lively experimental theater groups, is named after a Gertrude Stein poem from the collection Tender Buttons. And so it makes perfect sense that they would be producing a show called Tender Buttons: A Derriere-Garde Rock & Cooking Cabaret, a musical based on that very same book.

Cassandra Victoria Chopourian, singer for Austin band The Water Margin, appears as Alice B. The lyrics are Stein’s poems, and the music is by Houstonian Gary Heidt. According to Jennifer Decker, the artistic director of Mildred’s Umbrella, the piece “is a performance-art musical, like an old German cabaret…The poems are very non-sequitur, very surreal,” says Decker. “It reminds me of Kurt Weil.” (A little MT trivia for theater fans: The poem Mildred’s Umbrella doesn’t mention a Mildred or an umbrella.) 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Obsidian Art Space, 3522 White Oak. For information, call 832-889-7837 or visit www.mildredsumbrella.com. $20.
