More About

Eschenbach, a well-known interpreter of Mahler, has called the composer “the greatest symphonist ever.” He first heard Mahler in 1961 and says he quickly developed his own approach to the music. “The door opened very quickly,” he said during a recent taped interview. “There are other composers that I have struggled with, not understanding, for years and years, then the door opened all of the sudden — with Shostakovich, for example. But with Mahler it came very fast.”

One of the highlights of today’s performance is sure to be the Adagietto, the ten-plus-minute movement considered one of Mahler’s most famous pieces. 7:30 p.m. Jones Hall, 615 Louisiana. For information, call 713-224-7575 or visit www.houstonsymphony.org. $35 to $139.
