Gainsbourg: Vie héroïque (Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life)

Be among the first to see Gainsbourg: Vie héroïque (Gainsbourg: A Heroic Life) during a weekend premiere at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Comic book artist Joann Sfar makes his directorial debut with the film, a thoughtful look at Serge Gainsbourg, equal parts singer, womanizer and French pop icon. Eric Elmosnino appears as Gainsbourg (and took home best actor awards at both the Tribeca Film Festival and the Césars for his performance).

Starting with Gainsbourg’s childhood in Nazi-occupied Paris, Sfar follows the singer through his time as a jazz musician, then finally as a huge pop star. All the while Sfar adds bits about Gainsbourg’s famous lovers; Laetitia Casta appears as Brigitte Bardot and Lucy Gordon as Jane Birkin.

On Friday, Vie héroïqueis paired with the 1984 documentary Gainsbourg: Extérieur Nuit (Gainsbourg: Exterior Night), by Patrice Vanoni, a candid look at the singer’s lifestyle that follows him for a glamorous, randy night on the town. 6 p.m. 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7515 or visit www.mfah.org. $6 to $7.
Thu., Dec. 15, 7 p.m.; Fri., Dec. 16, 6 p.m.; Sat., Dec. 17, 7 p.m.; Sun., Dec. 18, 5 p.m., 2011
