Go retro this Christmas at the Santa’s Cool Holiday Film Festival screening this weekend at the River Oaks Theatre. First up are several cartoons, including two from the Fleischer Brothers, the 1936 Christmas Comes But Once a Year and the 1948 Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer. Other cartoons include a hammy holiday message from children’s entertainer Shari Lewis and her hand puppet/co-star Lamb Chop, and seasonal episodes featuring Howdy Doody and television parents Ozzie and Harriet.

All of that’s just a build-up to the festival’s big attraction, Santa Claus Conquers the Martians. Just in case you’re not sure how cheesy Martiansis, you should know that the film stars Pia Zadora. (Yes, that pip-squeak ball of no-talent, singer-actor-celebrity-for-no-reason Pia Zadora.) It’s all good, groan-out-loud, campy holiday fun when two Earth kids try to save Santa from Martians who’ve invaded the planet in search of someone to give their alien kids Christmas gifts. (Why, oh why, didn’t we send Pia to Mars when we had the chance?) 11:55 p.m. Friday and Saturday. 2009 West Gray. For information, call 713-866-8881 or visit www.landmarktheatres.com. $10.
