Ars Lyrica: Bach and Time

Explore eternity with Ars Lyrica during Bach and Time, an all-Bach concert followed by the group’s New Year’s Eve Gala. Soprano Melissa Givens, countertenor Ryland Angel and tenor Zach Averyt join the orchestra in a program that includes “Orchestral” Suite No. 3 in D Major, Christmas Oratorio, Pt. 5 and Bach’s Cantata 106. The composer was only 22 years old when he wrote the Cantata’s opening sonatina, which is considered one of his most important works. The lyrics include bits of both the Old and the New Testament, along with church songs, all of them focused on death and dying, finiteness and eternity. Highlights will surely be the orchestra’s performance of the sonatina and Givens’s solo at the end of the second movement. A festive gala follows the concert with more music, free-flowing champagne and nibbles. 9 p.m. Hobby Center, 800 Bagby. For information, call 713-315-2525 or visit www.arslyricahouston.org. $31.25 to $41.25.
