''Discovering the Civil War''
With apologies to the History Channel, watching re-enactments and talking heads on television won’t bring the Civil War to life in the way that seeing a soldier’s prayer book with a bullet hole in it will. “Discovering the Civil War,” currently at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, brings to light the impact the war had on thousands on both sides, from soldiers and the families they left behind, to politicians and businessmen who made their careers on the spoils.

The exhibit is divided into 12 thematic areas, with each being anchored by historical documents. These range from a heartbreaking list of motherless black children from a postwar orphanage to the original 13th Amendment abolishing slavery. 9 a.m to 5 p.m. Wednesdays through Mondays, 9 a.m. to 8 p.m Tuesdays.
