The Menil Collection has opened up its impressive collection of Eastern Orthodox religious icons for the exhibit Imprinting the Divine: Byzantine and Russian Icons from The Menil Collection. Some 600 years of Eastern Orthodox faith are represented, with more than 60 religious icons from Russia, Greece and the Balkans. Icons do not play a large role in religion in Western Christianity, but in Eastern Orthodox faiths, they play a vital role. The pictures, strangely two-dimensional, stylized and highly symbolic portraits of Jesus Christ, the Virgin Mother or saints, were meant to provide direct contact with the deities. Some of the works from Byzantium itself are particularly rare and wonderful, with their subjects painted upon golden panels. 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday through Sundays.
