MFAH Film Premieres: 2011 British Arrows

Don’t be confused by the name 2011 British Arrows — it’s just the new moniker for the British Television Advertising Awards. The hilarity and amazing images are still the same. Made up of television commercials that are either over-the-top, bawdy, insanely creative or heartrending, this year’s Arrows include bits by T-Mobile, Heineken and Volkswagen.

Our favorite is “Control” by Nike. Using a variety of trick lenses and unusual angles, the camera shoots a soccer player as he goes from workout to a game and back again. Incredibly quick edits show him in a scrimmage, then a game, up and down the field, kicking the ball and making a goal. It’s a jumble of exciting shots, all with him at the center. The commercial was noticed not for its video editing, which is wonderful, but for its sound editing. Each shot is accompanied by the right ambient sounds, and since some shots last less than two seconds, smoothly switching from the roaring stadium to the sounds of practice was an impressive feat. 3 and 5 p.m. Sunday, 7 p.m. Thursday and Friday. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7515 or visit www.mfah.org. $5 to $7.
