The Wizard of Oz

Singing star Judy Garland made a measly $500 a week while filming MGM’s classic fantasy musical The Wizard of Oz (1939). Character actors Ray Bolger and Jack Haley raked in a then-hefty $3,000 a week. The only principal actor (and we use the term loosely here) to earn less than Garland was Terry, the wire-haired Cairn terrier who played Toto and got $125 a week. Thankfully, Garland turned in a million-dollar performance anyway. From the time she leaves Kansas and goes on a glorious Technicolor journey of self-discovery, to the time she clicks those ruby red shoes together and wakes up at home, Garland is a singing, dancing, emoting delight (come on — like you can resist it when she sings “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”). 7 pm. Rice University, 6100 Main. For information, call 713-348-4882 or visit www.ricecinema.rice.edu. Free.
