We know that the exhibit ''9 by Mick Johnson'' is going to be about golf and golf courses. Beyond that, it’s all up in the air. That’s because Johnson hasn’t built the installation pieces yet. Not only has he not built them, but the plans and ideas he came in with on his first day of working in the gallery were discarded by early afternoon. “It’s kinda experimental, and I don’t know where I’m going. It’s all changing minute by minute,” he told us on that first day. “It’s kinda like hitting a golf ball; you never really know where it’s going to go. You’ve always got to make a new decision about what to do next every time you hit the ball. So it is about the architecture of a golf course and the architecture of the game of golf. But if one shows up thinking about a golf course, they’re probably not going to get that. That’s just the basis from which to work, a starting point.”
''9 by Mick Johnson'' will be spread over two floors in the Rice Media Center. “I can’t say for sure,” Johnson says, “but I think the installation part will take place downstairs.” The upstairs space will include (maybe) paintings Johnson made in his studio in preparation for the exhibit and some wall drawings. Johnson says he’ll likely include more background work because the exhibit’s at a university, which means many of the viewers will be students. “I want to show them more behind the scenes about how I got here.”
