Chalk one up for Main Street Theater — it’s snagged the first U. S. production of The Coast of Utopia, a trilogy by Tom Stoppard, since the play was premiered at Lincoln Center six years ago. Voyage, the first installment in the series, chronicles the years between 1833 and 1866, a time when four real-life Russian intellectuals came of age under the oppressive Tsar Nicholas. The men — Alexander Herzen, Ivan Turgenev, Vissarion Belinsky and Michael Bakunin — cross paths repeatedly, together sowing the seeds of the Russian Revolution. The focus in Voyage is on Bakunin’s family and his growing circle of intellectual friends and revolutionary comrades. Stoppard explores the power of young people to turn their ideas into action, thereby changing the world. Preview performances: 7:30 p.m. January 7, 8 and 11.
