Disaster Ball

When the Mayans predicted the end of the world, they probably didn’t foresee the apocalypse being used as the theme for an annual arts gala. That’s what the Fresh Arts Coalition, along with online art publication Glasstire, has done with the Disaster Ball, their ninth annual “anti-gala” fundraising event. It’s a themed costume party, with guests invited to dress as their favorite calamities, from pop culture misfortunes (think celebrity mugshots) to natural catastrophes (a little tsunami, anyone?).

To help ring in the end of the world, the ball features a performance by the group ICONS - M.J., a Michael Jackson cover band, and guests can learn of their impending doom from a practicing fortune-teller. That’s the fun; the fundraising part is an auction of original work by Texas-based artists. 8 p.m. La Colombe d’Or, 3410 Montrose. For information, call 713-850-0939 or visit www.houstonartball.org. $100 to $10,000.
Fri., Jan. 27, 8 p.m., 2012
