C. S. Lewis is most famous for his Narnia Chronicles, but he’s also the central character in William Nicholson’s bighearted, very sad Shadowlands, onstage now at Texas Repertory Theatre.

The story focuses on Lewis’s tender love affair with poet Joy Gresham. The two met when he was late-middle-aged; she was much younger. She had written to him as a fan, and the two became fast friends before he began to realize his true feelings for her.
Nicholson starts the play with a lecture by Lewis on why God allows us to suffer. Lewis, who was an ardent believer, tells us, “The blows of his chisel, which hurt us so much, are what make us perfect.” The story that follows shows just how much pain the chisel of life can inflict on the human heart. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. Through February 19. 14243 Stuebner Airline. For information, call 281-583-7573 or visit www.texreptheatre.org. $45.
