2011 Oscar Nominees: Best Documentary (Short Subject)

If there’s a theme to the 2011 Oscar Nominees: Best Documentary (Short Subject), it’s one of resilience. In The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom by Lucy Walker and Kira Carstensen, unseen villagers stand on a mountainside and watch as the tsunami uproots homes and sweeps away cars. We hear their comments as they watch, such as, “Dad, where’s Grandma?”and “Oh, no, no!” Later, we see the view from that same mountainside, and while the village is still devastated, the cherry blossom trees in the area are in bloom. The contrast of destruction with new life is profound. Walker is the filmmaker who made the highly acclaimed Vic Muniz, Waste Land. Tsunami is just one of four documentary shorts nominated for this year’s Academy Awards. See which one would get your vote today at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7515 or visit www.mfah.org. $6 to $7.
