The Coast of Utopia: Shipwreck

There are some parts of the character of revolutionary Michael Bakunin that are so unlikeable, it was difficult at first to play him, actor Guy Roberts told us. He’s easily the most annoying, and yet in some ways the most enthralling, character in Voyage, the first part of Tom Stoppard’s The Coast of Utopiatrilogy. Thankfully in the other two segments, Shipwreck, which is now playing, and Salvage, which is upcoming, other sides of Bakunin are revealed.

More About

Roberts, who grew up in Houston before eventually settling in Prague, had never done a Stoppard play before, but he’s enjoying the experience. “I really didn’t know a great deal about these Russian thinkers and philosophers. But you certainly don’t have to know anything about history to understand these plays,” he said. “The characters have real problems: love, loyalty, the meaning of life, how to make a difference.” And, at least with Roberts’s character, an unpleasant side.
