Cinderella

Forget “poor Cinderella,” the much abused but ever optimistic girl at the beck and call of her evil stepmother and stepsisters. In Stanton Welch’s version of Cinderella, she’s smart, sassy and determined. “What always bothered me about the story was this concept that you had to rely on some mythical man or woman to come and rescue you,” Welch says in an online interview. “I wanted to create a Cinderella who had choices.” And choices abound, since this Cinderella has a twist. There’s another man in the picture besides the Prince. Houston Ballet’s Cinderella is “feisty, and a real firecracker,” says Welch. “A real Texas woman.”
