When Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater hits the stage today, it will be bringing a new electricity along with its beloved traditions (yes, Revelations will be included in every performance), new director Robert Battle promises. Battle, only the third director the dance company has ever had — after founder Alvin Ailey and Judith Jamison — is touring the country in his inaugural season. Included will be his first commissioned work, Home, choreographed by Rennie Harris, a hip-hop choreographer, which was inspired by stories of people living with the HIV virus and dedicated to Ailey, who died of that disease, Battle says. Different offerings are available at each performance, so be sure to check before you buy your tickets.
