unBlocked

Video, photography, installation and sculpture make up unBlocked, a group show by the f/16 Collective. The Aurora Picture Show’s Mary Magsamen, who curated the exhibit, was happy to see the variety among the work submitted for the show. The f/16 Collective is made up of the students of the University of Houston 2012 Photography and Digital Media graduating class, who’ve been working together for the last two years. Magsamen has seen members of other such groups grow to have too-similar styles, but found the f/16 Collective members maintained distinctly individual work.

Among the most offbeat and humorous contributions is Gisela Parker’s exploration of social and mass media through her creation, Maude Middleton. A headless mannequin, Maude has become an Internet sensation. She has a Facebook page with daily posts and more than 1,000 friends. “We have 30 mutual friends,” Magsamen says, laughing. Parker will have various videos on display, including one showing the pair breaking up. The exhibit will also include Maude’s photo album, with shots of Maude at various Houston locations. (The mannequin has a stylish wardrobe and likes to party.)
