Few bands wreaked more havoc within alternative rock in the late '80s and the first half of the '90s than the Jesus & Mary Chain. Known for their ill temper, beautiful melodies and deafening feedback, Glaswegian brothers Jim and William Reid sometimes greeted their early audiences with 20-minute barrages of nothing but noise; sometimes they also fought each other onstage. Nonetheless, the brothers' confrontational behavior often obscured the fact that their pop instincts rivaled one of their main inspirations, Phil Spector. Those gifts admittedly came through clearer on records such as 1985 debut Psychocandy and 1987's Darklands than live; those two albums helped define both "goth" and "shoegaze" both then and now. By the time of the Mary Chain's final original recording, 1998 Sub Pop one-off Munki, they had left their mark on nearly every band that came after them, a long list that includes My Bloody Valentine, Spiritualized, the Pixies, Mazzy Star, Raveonettes, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Sleigh Bells.
