Blue Monday is a Houston tradition that has virtually died out in the last few years. Once important social and musical events at such storied joints as Miss Ann's Playpen and Etta's Lounge, these soirees involving early-afternoon drinking, lively socializing and continuous jamming seem to have dried up completely, although something similar occurs every Sunday at Mr. Gino's in Sunnyside. But D Bar, near the Third Ward intersection of Dowling and Wheeler, has recently begun an interesting program, with blues shouters Trudy Lynn and Gloria Edwards alternating Mondays. Both ladies are accompanied by their bands — Edwards is backed by Guy Schwartz and members of the New Jack Hippies, Lynn by Milton Hopkins — and seeing these renowned blues singers in such an intimate venue should make for some fine Blue Mondays indeed. With its happy-hour start time and early finish, hopefully this event will gather enough support to keep a longstanding but dying Houston tradition going.
