2012 Vietnamese Festival

Hope Initiative pays honor to the founders of Vietnam at today's 2012 Vietnamese Festival. A highlight of the day-long festival is the Chopped Competition. The well-known YouTube duo Tran Can Cook (Viet and Kevin Tran) will act as judges for the face-off between local chefs (everyone will be given the same secret ingredient). Ethnic dances, including the Mua Xoan, an ancient royal Vietnamese dance that has never been performed in Houston, are on the bill. There will also be sword, fan and lion dances, as well as a family-friendly cultural reinterpretation of The Little Mermaid. Visual arts and music, both from the ancient to traditional to the latest in pop culture, will be on the entertainment schedule, including performances by Vietnamese opera, folk musicians and hip-hop groups. There's also the My Nuon Princess Pageant, along with lots of Vietnamese games and, of course, plenty of delicious food. 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Discovery Green, 1500 McKinney. For information, call 281-826-4673 or visit www.discoverygreen.com. $5 to $10.
