Among the canon of plays set in barbershops and beauty parlors is Charles Randolph-Wright’s Cuttin’ Up. As in its counterparts, Steel Magnolias and, of course, Barbershop, stories are told and history uncovered as hair is cut and combed.

In an article in LA Stage, Randolph-Wright called Cuttin’ Up a “drama of camaraderie,” but there’s also lots of comedy. Among the one-liners in the script is the revealing gem “The great thing about men is that we don’t deal with stuff.” But moments with more gravitas happen as well. The men discuss the murder of Emmett Till, reminisce about cutting hair during the dark ages of the AIDS crisis in San Francisco during the 1980s, and argue over the value of hip-hop music.
