Rob Landes Trio

Please don’t call what Houston pianist Rob Landes does smooth jazz. Yes, it’s jazz, and yes, it’s smooth, but not that kind of smooth. More accurately, it’s swing with a dash of bebop. For today’s performance, From Ella to Ellington, the Rob Landes Trio concentrates mostly on the Great American Songbook of the 1920s through the 1950s. Expect cool takes on standards like “The Best Is Yet to Come,” “It Had to Be You” and “Tuxedo Junction,” along with “Sunny Side of the Street” and “Laura.”

More About

Two bits of Rob Landes trivia: One, a four-year-old Landes made his professional debut on the Art Linkletter’s House Party program, sharing the stage not only with Linkletter but with Tommy Dorsey, who was also a guest. Two, Landes was the keyboard player in the Houston-based 1960s psychedelic group Fever Tree, whose signature tune “San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)” is a minor classic of the era.
