That paisley tie you gave your dad for Father’s Day last year might just be part of Roberta Stokes’s ''TIE-BREAKER'' exhibition, now on display at Art League Houston. It’s a collection of mostly secondhand ties, bow ties and tie labels, all woven and put into frames or manipulated into shapes. Along the interior wall of the gallery are Stokes’s “Tie Dresses,” made up of ties in coordinated colors that have been vertically fused together into silhouettes that dance along the walls like fabric-store hieroglyphics.

The other wall of the gallery hosts perhaps the most eye-catching pieces in the exhibit, the tie paintings, which are not paintings at all but actual ties intricately interlaced in a basket weave design and surrounded by a silver frame. Stokes doesn’t attempt to create an image with the material; there’s no effort at a landscape or portrait, for example. It’s just a whimsical jumble of patterns and colors meant to entertain and amuse.
