Frommer’s Travel Guides designated the Houston Children’s Festival as one of the World’s 300 Unmissable Events. No wonder, since it’s the largest and, we might add, grandest, festival for kids in the United States. Houston’s 2012 version is so big, it fills several blocks downtown, from Tranquility Park, across City Hall, to Sam Houston Park.

There are lots of interactive family activity and entertainment zones, from Baker Hughes Circus Town, home to Angelina and Her Famous High Trapeze Act and Rola Bola Acrobatic Balance Bonanza, to Apache Super Science World, where Mad Science and the Museum of Natural Science present experiments that are sure to leave kids wide-eyed with wonder.
Celebrities are abundant at the festival. There’s James Maslow, who stars as James Diamond on the Nickelodeon hit show Big Time Rush; Raini Rodriguez, who stars as Trish on the Disney Channel original series Austin & Alley; Clive Berkman, The Chef Dude; and Buddy, the T-Rex dinosaur from Dinosaur. There’s also entertainment by magicians, singers, martial arts experts and theater troupes. Translation: Get there early and plan to stay late; there’s lots to do. 10:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. City Hall, 900 Bagby. For information, visit www.houstonchildrensfestival.com.
