WorldFest-Houston International Independent Film Festival

Take your Benzedrine and stamp that Starbucks card, you’re gonna be up for two weeks. It’s the 45th annual WorldFest-Houston International Independent Film Festival, so prepare for klieg lights, Tinseltown luminaries and enough new indie movies to stuff a Redbox.

The festival opens with the shaggy-dog story Smitty, a world premiere from director David Michael Evans (writer of family-friendly fare The Sandlot and Radio Flyer), starring Peter Fonda, Louis Gossett Jr., Mira Sorvino and Lolita Davidovich. In the film, rebellious tyke Ben (young newcomer Brandon Tyler Russell) gets sent to his grandfather’s farm for needed summer R&R, meets neighboring mutt Smitty and gets his act together. The film screens st 8 p.m. on April 13.

Edgier films to be enjoyed and, no doubt, heatedly discussed afterward include Villi Hermann’s A Sensual Vision of the World, a documentary on master Swiss photographer Gotthard Schuh (5 p.m. April 14); Just 45 Minutes from Broadway, iconoclastic actor/director Henry Jaglom’s dissection of the showbiz family (7 p.m. April 20); City of Gardens, Camilo Vila’s brutal Peruvian take on Midnight Express (7 p.m. April 20); and Tigisti, Daniel Tesfamariam’s Eritrean drama about orphaned sisters (5 p.m. April 22).
