An Ordinary Family

The tagline to Houston filmmaker Mike Akel’s latest feature, An Ordinary Family, is “A week of vacation. A lifetime to unpack.” Of course, we’re talking about baggage of the emotional kind. Shot entirely in Austin, the drama centers on two brothers during their family’s annual summer vacation. Preacher Thomas is more than a little surprised when his estranged brother Seth brings along his boyfriend. Surprise!

Writer/director Akel, known for the comedic mockumentary Chalk, says An Ordinary Family was born from his friendships with “Christians, homosexuals and Christian homosexuals,” according to press materials. Akel will be on hand at the screening. 7 p.m. Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, 1001 Bissonnet. For information, call 713-639-7300 or visit www.mfah.org. $7 general admission.
Sat., April 21, 7 p.m., 2012
