11 a.m. Saturday, April 21, and Sunday, April 22, in downtown Houston (around Sam Houston Park), 713-654-8808 or www.ifest.org.
Texas and South America share vast size and varied terrain, a rich cattle-ranching history and a flair for musical dramatics that makes the two places natural partners for the Houston International Festival. Although Argentina is heavily accentuated this year, the first weekend's honored guests are Venezuela's Los Amigos Invisibles, a roving dance party that incorporates funk, jazz, Latin and disco. David Byrne signed the Caracas crew, which plays the Bud Light World Stage at 4:30 p.m. Saturday and Center Stage 3 p.m. Sunday, to his Luaka Bop label in 1996 and — as you can imagine from their musical ingredients — they have a sterling live reputation. The rest of the lineup is studded with hearty regional fare across a wide range of genres, from Latin rock (Los Lonely Boys, Houston's Espantajaros) and funk (JJ Grey & MOFRO, Galactic) to rockin' country (Jesse Dayton, Stone River Boys, Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit) and blues and zydeco (Ruthie Foster, Keith Frank & the Soileau Zydeco Band). See more on iFest's non-musical events in "Night & Day," and the festival's Web site.
