Big Screen Classics: Cool Hand Luke

Paul Newman, Cool Hand Luke, 1967. Do we really need to say anything else? Newman was at the height of his prowess as an actor when he took on the role of a smart-assed prisoner who was a major pain for the warden (think One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest but with a slightly different setting and a much better-looking protagonist). As an actor, Newman did things his own way in Hollywood, so his kinship with Luke, who refused to bend to the sadistic warden’s will, was obvious. Get there early and cheer on the contestants in the hard-boiled egg-eating contest (if you don’t get that reference now, you will after the movie). 6 p.m. Alamo Drafthouse, West Oaks, 1000 West Oaks. For information, call 281-920-9211 or visit www.drafthouse.com/westoaks.
