Carrie Fisher: Wishful Drinking

Carrie Fisher has written candid, autobiographical novels about her family, her long struggle with addiction and being bipolar (she credits electroshock therapy with making her better). Now the fabled daughter of Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher (he walked out on the family when she was two to be with Elizabeth Taylor) is coming to the Hobby Center with her one-woman show Wishful Drinking, based on her book by the same title. And her show promises to be as unrestrained as her books. “I talk about being bipolar and everything that goes with it. Drug addiction goes with mine, extreme happiness, extreme unhappiness, shopping. Creativity. It makes your life very interesting, which is the Chinese curse,” she said. She starred as Princess Leia when she was only 19 years old, was once married to Paul Simon and has a daughter, who’s “proud of me and wishes I’d write fiction.”

Growing up, Fisher says she was a serious kid who joked around on the outside. “I was brought up by people who were extroverted, or what I call ‘focus pullers.’ So I didn’t want to be that,” which is why it was something of a surprise to her that she really enjoys doing her show — whose last stop will be in Houston before she packs up her Princess Leia doll and goes home to work on something else. 7 p.m. Through May 20. Hobby Center, 800 Bagby. For information, call 800-982-2787 or go to www.broadwayacrossamerica.com/houston.
