It’s been almost 100 years since Marcel Duchamp created his Bicycle Wheel and launched the ready-made art movement. The exhibit “It is what it is. Or is it?” explores the current status of the once revolutionary form. Has ready-made become static, so integrated into today’s art scene that it’s lost its ability to push the viewer to question the definition of art? Or is it still a radical idea? Or is it instead something in-between?

“It is what it is. Or is it?” is organized by Contemporary Arts Museum Houston Curator Dean Daderko (his first at the museum). Works include Felix Gonzalez-Torres’s Untitled, a tangle of lightbulbs in silver sockets connected by an extension cord, and Patrick Killoran’s An Inconspicuous Addition, a portable cooler filled with melting ice and a rough diamond.
