Made in America

There are lots of firsts in Houston Ballet’s spring repertory program, Made in America. There’s the company premiere of Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes by Mark Morris. There’s a reprise of Theme and Variations by George Balanchine, one of the first works by the choreographer that the Houston Ballet performed after Stanton Welch took on the role of artistic director. And there’s the world premiere of See(k) by choreographer Nicolo Fonte, the first piece he created for the company. The music for See(k), by composer Anna Clyne, is her first original score for a ballet. It’s the first collaboration between the two artists.

More About

Fonte notes that working with Clyne on See(k) was both exciting and frightening. “With this project, Anna and I created everything from the ground up. This is a much scarier and riskier venture than setting a ballet on music that already exists. When you choreograph on existing music, in some way the music dictates the movement and mood,” Fonte says via press materials.
