Allen Salkin: From Scratch: Inside the Tumultuous Billion-Dollar World of the Food Network

Here’s the best Julia Child story we’ve ever heard: The superstar American cook, author and television show host, recognized for her landmark cookbook, Mastering the Art of French Cooking, once fell asleep in her chair as her makeup was being applied. Despite falling asleep, Child never lost her grip on a bag of McDonald’s french fries she was holding. Is it true? Or just another urban legend? Allen Salkin, author of From Scratch: Inside the Tumultuous Billion-Dollar World of the Food Network, knows, and he’s telling at the 41st Annual Jewish Book and Arts Festival. With a background as an investigative journalist, Salkin pulls back the curtain on the Food Network, from its earliest days as an upstart to its recent difficulties with its big-name chefs, including Emeril Lagasse and Paula Deen.
