Beehive

The jukebox musical Beehive: The ’60s Musical is a fun bit of musical fluff, according to Steven Fenley, artistic director for the Texas Repertory Theatre Company. “Our summer shows are kind of a gift to our patrons, and this is just a lot of fun,” he tells us. “Beehive’s got a great set of songs. Almost all of the great girl-group songs you can imagine are in the show.” The show is a revue, based on a theme rather than a plot, so there’s no storyline. The six actors sing some 48 songs in several styles, moving quickly from one to another while changing wigs and costumes to reflect the time period. That might seem to be an exhausting task, but it’s one Beehive’s all-female cast relishes. “We’ve got six really strong ladies who can just sing lights out,” says Fenley. “The show covers everything from the beginning of the 1960s to Janis Joplin at Woodstock.” Songs by The Supremes, Aretha Franklin, Petula Clark, Connie Francis and The Chiffons make up the score. “When you have a show that’s made up of nothing but hit songs,” says Fenley, “it’s hard to go wrong.” 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 3 p.m. Sundays. 14243 Stuebner Airline.
