Bike, Bats, and Brews

Houston boasts the only year-round bat colony in Texas. Some 300,000 Mexican free-tailed bats make their home under the Waugh Drive Bridge, emerging each evening at dusk to fly into the night and devour around two and a half tons of insects. You want to see that at least once, and now you can make an evening of it with Bikes, Bats, and Brews. The adventure starts at the Market Square Park. Bring or rent a bike to take a two-wheeled trip down the Buffalo Bayou Hike Trail to the viewing platform near the bridge. From there, participants will watch the bats take flight as the sun goes down. Once the winged ones are on their way, you're invited to bike down to Brewery Tap and then La Carafe with the Bayou City Outdoors crew for a refreshing adult beverage. ''Best part of the ride is twofold: It's easy to meet lots of people while riding and chatting,'' said spokesperson Kelly Howard. ''Secondly, people aren't used to seeing Houston by bike. You see all kinds of things you would never notice in a car.''
