Imagine Andrew Jackson (yes, that Andrew Jackson) as an emo rock star. Bloody, Bloody Andrew Jackson does just that. George Brock, artistic director for Generations: A Theatre Company, tells us, “It being an election year, we thought we’d do plays about America. We did Our Town, and we thought we’d pair that with this rock-and-roll, funhouse, sketch comedy dissertation on populism in America.”

The plot is a series of fast vignettes based loosely on the Andrew Jackson presidency. As the show goes on, he begins to evolve into an emo, rock superstar. There’s a four-piece grunge band onstage, along with 14 actors. “Yeah, but there are something like 162 characters, so that’s really not enough,” laughs Brock.

Despite the onstage band, Brock says this is not a musical, rather it’s a play with music. “You have a play that is interrupted by the world of song. In a traditional musical, the character is overcome with such emotion that they have no choice but to sing. This is more like, ‘We have reached the point in the story where we are now going to comment on what just happened and we’re going to do that with a rock song.’” 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays, 2:30 and 7:30 p.m. Sundays.
