Glenn Peters, professor of early medieval and Byzantine art at the University of Texas at Austin, got to dig through The Menil Collection's storage vaults as he put together ''Byzantine Things in the World.'' The exhibition explores the relationship between ancient and contemporary art through iconography. Some 70 works spanning from 9,000 BC to the present are on display, including ancient reliquaries, pilgrim tokens and icons. The items range from a painting of Saint John the Baptist done in tempera and gold leaf to American abstract painting and minimalist sculpture.
