Cinderella

There’s a new holiday theater tradition brewing at the Ensemble Theatre. Due to popular request, the company is staging its rendition of Cinderella for the third year in a row. Don’t expect the familiar tale of the girl who left her glass slipper at the ball — at least not completely. The production keeps the fairy tale’s core elements, but has re-imagined the story for a broader, hipper audience. (The fairy godmother, for example, is a diva of epic proportions.)

Cinderella was originally created by the African-American Shakespeare Company, but the Ensemble Theatre has managed to infuse the reworked fairy tale with its own signature flourishes. Composer and lyricist Carlton Leakes, the man behind so many of the Ensemble’s musical productions, has written new music for the show. And director Patdro Harris has added a distinct movement style to the show’s many dance sequences. With lush set designs and elaborate costumes, Cinderellais a delightful production the entire family will enjoy. 7:30 p.m. Thursdays, 8 p.m. Fridays, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturdays. 3 p.m. Sundays. Through December 23. 3535 Main.
Thursdays-Sundays. Starts: Nov. 15. Continues through Dec. 23, 2012
